Loretta M. Recktenwald Scheidel Denny
Denny, Loretta M. Recktenwald Scheidel 90, passed away on July 15, 2014.
She was a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross in Louisville. She began teaching first aid courses to Boy and Girl Scouts in the mid 1960s. As a giving person, she wanted to continue helping others. She, along with her husband, Claude, joined the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Team and traveled across the United States setting up relief centers to assist those in need. She received the Clara Barton Honor Award in 1973. This is the highest award the American Red Cross bestows on volunteers. It recognizes meritorious service in volunteer leadership positions held over a period of years. She also was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel.
Her final act of giving is bequeathing her body to the University of Louisville School of Medicine for the advancement of medical science and education.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, William Thomas and Olivia Rose Recktenwald and her first husband, John Scheidel.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Claude B Denny; sons, Bill Scheidel (Bonnie) and Don Scheidel (Judy); daughters, Judy Houglan (Norman) and Sandy Bickett (Dennis); four stepsons, Mike, Steve, David and James Denny. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Rose Landrum (Kenneth); 23 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the American Red Cross, Louisville Chapter at 510 E Chestnut St. from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy donations may be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Services.
